Endlich wieder ein Album, das meine Erwartung übererfüllt! Songs, die einen mit so vielen Emotionen umfassen, dass man unweigerlich eine Gänsehaut verspürt. Olivia Dean hat mit ihrem Album Messy wirklich ein ganz besonderes Werk herausgebracht. Im Interview spricht die Londoner Musikerin über ihr Debüt, teilt ihre Erfahrung zum besten Umgang im männlich dominierten Musikbusiness und verrät uns, mit wem sie gern auf einer Bühne stehen würde.
Olivia Dean hat sich mit ihrem Debüt recht viel Zeit gelassen. Nach zahlreichen Singles und EPs, die bereits Begeisterungsstürme in vielen Medien hervorgerufen haben, legt die Musikerin nun mit Messy nach.
Wenn ich einen Vergleich ziehen müsste, um die Musikerin zu charakterisieren, würde ich wohl am ehesten Joss Stone, Alicia Keys oder Christina Aguilera nennen. Jedoch mit mehr Soul, mehr Leichtigkeit, Groove und leichten Beats. Die dunkle, fast rauchige Stimme, die uns immer wieder eine Gänsehaut bereitet und uns schmunzeln lässt, ist derzeit einmalig.
Olivia Dean schreibt ihre Songs herrlich bildlich und zieht die Parallelen zwischen Alltag und Wunsch unbeschwert, dass es eine Freude ist, sich vorzustellen, sie würde wirklich den Blumenladen an der Ecke öffnen, von dem sie in “I Could Be Florist” singt.
Dieses Album schafft es, was ich persönlich lange nicht mehr für möglich gehalten habe: Mich, die ich seit Jahren den “großen” Künstler:innen verweigere, wieder für diese Musik zu öffnen. Nein, sogar im Flug zu gewinnen. Vor ca. 1,5 Jahren bin ich auf diese Sängerin über das Streaming-Portal Spotify aufmerksam geworden. Immer auf der Suche nach ausdrucksstarken, vorzugsweise weiblichen Stimmen, ist mein Ohr an Reasons to Stay hängen geblieben. Ein Song, der mit den leichten Beats, den Loop-Chören und den sanften Bläsern so eindringlich nach Gründen des Verbleibens in einer kaputten Beziehung fragt, dass wir uns am Ende beim Loslassen versöhnt fühlen. Die ganze EP mit Hardest Part, OK Love You Bye und Be My Own Boyfriend, ist übrigens eine Empfehlung für alle, die sich nach einem großen Struggle wieder selbst finden wollen. In weniger als 15 Minuten das Selbstvertrauen zurückgewinnen? Geht kaum besser als mit dieser EP.
Diese Lässigkeit, die uns Olivia Dean damals erstmals präsentiert hat, toppt sie in ihrem Debüt Messy gleich mehrfach. Dabei gibt sie uns ein Album, das so perfekt komponiert und zusammengestellt ist, wie wir es in unserer schnelllebigen Zeit nur selten finden. Diese Perfektion, die Genauigkeit und die Tiefe der Gedanken, die wir immer wieder zwischen den Zeilen, Strophen und
einzelnen Stücken spüren, wird durch die Portion an Liebe, Persönlichkeit und Heiterkeit, die Olivia Deans Persönlichkeit widerspiegelt, gemildert. So sind die 10 Stücke und zwei Interludes nicht nur perfekter Soul-Pop, sie sind wirklich großartig, denn sie gehen unter die Haut.
Messy zeigt aber auch eine Musikerin, die genau weiss, was sie will. Eine Musikerin, die sich viele Gedanken um jedes Stück gemacht hat und ein sehr persönliches Album veröffentlicht hat. Vor dem Release hatte ich das Glück, ein Interview mit Olivia Dean führen zu dürfen. Wir sprachen über ihr Album, Lieblingssongs und ihre Vorbildfunktion als erfolgreiche Musikerin in einer männerdominierten Welt. Natürlich habe ich sie auch gefragt, mit wem sie gern auf einer Bühne stehen würde.

“The album is about me now”, Olivia started our conversation and answered directly to my question about the main theme of the debut. She told me that she put all the pressure that is normally put on you when producing an album. “Actually there are no rules, you can do whatever you want,” she told me.
This special kind of freedom can be felt while listening to the tracks. We started the interview with a chat about my favorite tracks: Dive, Carmen and Ladies Room.
“Dive seems to be a song about special love story, right?”, I asked her. “It’s a really special song for me,” Olivia told me. “I have a song that’s called Float. This was born out of the fear of the water. I am not a good swimmer. I do not love to be in the ocean. And then I wrote Dive. It was like I am ready to swim, I am ready to dive and conquer my fear of swimming as well as being in love. It´s about letting yourself be open to love and letting go. I am a tough cookie and sometimes it’s hard to let go.”
Second song on my top list is Ladies Room. With the walking bass, the soft horn section and the intro part, it´s just brilliant. „What´s the story behind it?“ I asked her.
“The story is good, let me tell you: I was in my local pub on a Friday night and walking in the ladies room. The ladies toilets are always chaos, like you might know. I was telling the guy in the record studio and he was asking ‘what you mean with chaos’? I answered “The boys toilets are like: Walking in, doing your business and walking out. But the ladies room – I told him, is always chaotic. People talking in there, boroughing lipsticks – it´ s community, it´s love!. And there was this lady shouting out: Girls never go out with a man who is 20 years older than you. You´ll be trapped, he wanted me to go home, I do not want to!’” That´s the intro of the song. Olivia Dean told me that she recorded it and used it later as an inspiration for the real intro.
We agreed that all the important decisions for women in the night are often set up in the girls restroom. This feeling of realness, independence, love and respect is put in this song. It´s a song with a dance rhythm but deep inside it´s about partnership in a special way. Inspired by some words in a ladies restroom in London on a Friday night.
The third song on my list is, of course, Carmen. It´s a song about her grandmother. Olivia Dean told me that she is influenced by her strength and that she is very close to her.
“In the process of doing this album, I was thinking about me as a mixed person and why am I here. I realized that everything draws back to her, because she made me what I am. I am a product of her bravery and I am grateful and I am very proud existing as a cross culture person of UK and Caribbean. I am in the middle and I love that. I used to feel confused about it and now I have reached an acceptance, where I can say – I am a perfect mixture. I feel comfortable now.”
That is what we can feel while listening to the new tracks. They show us a musician that is loving her life and feeling good the way she is and reflecting the world around her without fear.
„For many up and coming artists today – especially females – the music business is very tough. How did you manage to go your way?“, I asked Olivia Dean.
“I am very strong minded. I am very good in saying No. When you are a young woman and you have the older male executives at your side telling you what to do, you need to reflect yourself. You realize that their way must not be your way. You have to remember, ‘it´s my music and my art.’ You don’t have to say yes to everything because you want to be successful. Their version of success must not be the one you want to reach out for. That´s why am good in saying No.”
„What would be your advice for newcomers looking at your success and want to follow your way?“ “I believe that everyone’s intuition is stronger than they think from the beginning. Often you know straight away exactly what you want. You think about it for a long time and then you come back again to the starting point. My advice would be: “You have to paddle your own canoe,“ Olivia Dean answered.
Olivia Dean is indeed doing her thing. She just started her tour with many stops all over the world. I have asked her where she wanted to play when she will be given the chance to, she told me “So many. Maybe Australia would be great as well, New Zealand. Honestly: Everywhere they book me, i´ll come. South America, Brazil – get me there!“
„You said that you have been inspired by artists like Aretha Franklin or Carol King. Do you have any female artists nowadays you are inspired by and wanted to share a stage with?“
“My favorite personal artist is Alice Phoebe Lou. I saw her live so many times. She is so brilliant. Beyonce is cool. And maybe if I could do something with her and Solange that would be really cool,“ she laughs.
I think when this would happen, we will all be there. Even I would buy tickets right away. Thanks Olivia Dean for the interview.
Bereits zehn Tage nach unserem Gespräch ging es für die in London lebende Musikerin zu einem Gig nach Glastonbury Ende Juni. Es ist, wie sie mir mitteilte, derzeit DAS Festival. Wenn du hier gebucht bist, hast du es geschafft.
Für mich ist dies nur eine weitere Bestätigung dafür, dass man Olivia Dean auf dem Radar haben sollte. Aktuell sind ihre Gigs – gerade in Deutschland – recht spärlich gesät. Doch vor dem Stopp auf dem MS Dockville im August, tritt Olivia Dean noch auf dem Montreux Jazz Festival auf. Ein besseres Tour-Line-Up gibt es derzeit kaum für eine Musikerin.
Für mich ist Messy ein Album, das man in seiner Gänze Freunden und Bekannten empfiehlt und sich sicher sein kann, dass es immer wieder für Begeisterungsstürme sorgt. Wer es bis dato noch nicht kennt – unbedingt reinhören!
