„We want to connect with the people in a way where they feel the intensity of the love that we try to convey. Because it’s all about love. That’s what the whole Lee Fields thing is about,“ erzählt Lee Fields im MUSICSPOTS Interview vor seiner Show im Mojo Club am Mittwoch in Hamburg. Und so viel sei vorweggenommen: Das ist ihm und seiner Band definitiv gelungen.
Soul-Legende Lee Fields live im Mojo Club
Es war ein Abend voller Soul, Liebe, Freude und ehrlicher Musik am Mittwochabend im ausverkauften Mojo Club in Hamburg. Nach dem 20-minütigen Vorprogramm seiner Backingband betritt Lee Fields im funkelnden Blazer die Bühne. Mit seiner Stimme, Aura und Charisma zieht er das tosende Publikum sofort in seinen Bann. Der 72-jährige Soulsänger bewegt sich trotz seines Alters leichtfüßig über die Bühne und bildet mit seiner Band eine Einheit, die sich scheinbar blind versteht.
Das 90 Minuten lange Set bestand aus einem Mix aus Uptempo Nummern und Balladen wie You Can Count On Me, Standing By Your Side oder Money I$ King. Dabei gab er auch Auszüge seines aktuellen Albums Sentimental Fool wie Two Jobs oder Forever zum Besten. Es sind Songs, die direkt ins Herz gehen und berühren.
Mit seiner Musik Liebe zu geben und ehrliche Emotionen zu transportieren hat für Lee Fields größte Priorität, wie er im Interview erzählt: „Love is what I always try to build on my music around. Because what I feel is: The world needs a little bit more love. If we show more concern about each others human beings on earth we wouldn’t be in the situation that we’re in. […] Human beings should live in peace and harmony. That’s the way I think our lord and saviour advised us to be: To love each other, not to kill each other.“ Dies ist Antrieb und Inspiration zugleich, auch für die aktuelle Platte Sentimental Fool: „I make music about people’s emotion. The true emotions that people really go through. That’s what the album is really conveying.“
Ein mitreißender Konzertabend
Fields legt großen Wert darauf, mit seinen Songs an der traditionellen musikalischen Form und Instrumentation des Soul fest zu halten: „What I try to do is to stay as true as I can to the form of that music as possible. Because I don’t want to loose that Gospel feeling of it.“ Die Einflüsse des Gospels sind ein entscheidender Aspekt der Soulmusik, den auch aufstrebende Soul Musiker*innen seiner Meinung nach aufgreifen sollten: „I would tell a true soul artist that is coming up: Stay as close you can to the word. The word of god. Because the first soulman was Adam. When god put breath in Adam’s nostril, Adam became a living soul. And he was a man. So he was the first soulman. […] Stay to the word as close as you can. Try to do it and try to be as upright as you can.“
Auf die Frage, welcher Song ihm am Meisten bedeutet, antwortet Lee Fields schmunzelnd: „All of the songs really make me feel good. It’s kind of hard to say, because all of the songs are like my children. It’s just like asking me which child I like the best.“ Fügt dann aber hinzu: „Ladies is one of my favourites. Because I wrote that giving honour to all the women I met. My mother was a very important figure in my life and she always showed me the respect for ladies. So I would say: Ladies would be the one that is very special to me.“
Bei seinem Konzert im Mojo Club wurde der Song zwar nicht gespielt – für alle Neugierigen gibt es Ladies im Rahmen der Live-Performance des NPR Tiny Desk anlässlich des Black History Month hier zu sehen. Von der ersten bis zur letzten Sekunde präsentierte sich Lee Fields authentisch und nahbar. Er bezog das Publikum in seine Performance mit ein und erkundigte sich in regelmäßigem Abstand mit der Frage „Are you happy?“ nach der Stimmung, was das Publikum ihm jubelnd bestätigte. Der krönende Abschluss des Abends war ohne Zweifel die 20-minütige Zugabe, bei der die Band in James Brown Manier im Loop spielte. Lee Fields sang sich förmlich in Ekstase und schien alles um sich herum zu vergessen. Ein Augenblick, der nach dem Konzert noch vielen Gästen im Kopf geblieben sein dürfte.
