Review Reeperbahn Festival 2020 – Part 2 – on and behind the stages

Review Reeperbahn Festival 2020 second part.We show you more concert highlights and let professionals from the industry have their say. From pop to electro we were thrilled by the festival and the review gives us hope.

As always, I spontaneously let myself be drawn into one or the other concert. I turned off planned paths, discovered new music and had interesting conversations. My personal first conclusion is therefore: Also in 2020 Reeperbahn Festival means “enjoying music live and exchanging ideas with others”. Of course, always with check-in, check-out, mouth-and-nose protection and keeping your distance. But better than nothing. Here are my concert highlights from the Reeperbahn Festival 2020 for you.

Highlights from Rock to Pop

If you like wild beats, Koko is not to be missed. The trio from Bristol directly inspired me. Koko opened the Fritz stage at the Festival Village with their gig. After the set we were allowed to catch a short feedback. “It was fun. We had planed so many festivals this year and we are so glad to be here,” said singer Oliver Garland. The second show at Uebel & Gefährlich was also well received by the visitors. The performance is available until 16.12.20 in the ARTE Videothek.

The Hamburg-based musician lùisa is already well known far beyond Germany. This year she was able to present her upcoming new album on three stages. Beautiful Indie Pop, which is live in her arrangement. With her deep melodic voice, lùisa filled the big Spielbude as well as the little N-Joy Reeperbus at the other end of the mile.

Before I present you the other highlights of this year’s Reeperbahn Festival, I will let the professionals from the industry have their say. I have asked and captured reviews from different directions for you. The conclusion is quite positive and the difficult conditions seem to have hardly clouded the days in Hamburg. We decide not to translate the quotes from German to English. Hope you understand that it will may change the context.

The industry looks back

Miu (Artist, Germany)

Jan Rubach (Producer/Soundengineer /Artist/ Rkrdr Studio)

Melanie Gollin (Music journalist/ Head Of Marketing at Made Records)

Francesco Cetraro (Founder of GigsGuide)

“After 6 months of no travel and no live music, just the idea of coming to Hamburg for a quick visit was an absolute treat. Considering the situation, I had very low expectations for Reeperbahn Festival and I was just happy to get to see some live music. The atmosphere around the festival was indeed eerie: not a lot of people around, and all the check-ins and the social distancing were definitely a killjoy. And yet, in spite of all the odds, the artists did an amazing job and managed to connect with the audience and bring joy to our hearts. I was particularly happy to discover Blond, a really cool German band who delivered a really great show! I long for the time I get to see them again and dance under the stage!”

We hear a lot of gratitude and joy about the festival that took place in these really difficult times. But also the scepticism continues to be heard. Because we are all aware that these many concerts within four days on different stages have been a special case. It is an attempt to break new ground and to test something out. A first step, perhaps a small beginning. Many of the concerts are now available in the Reeperbahn Festival Videothek and on ARTE. But I personally think that they hardly represent the real live music experience. Because at least one of my most beautiful Reeperbahn Festival experiences is not captured on video for those at home. The performance of Icelandic Daði Freyr, which would definitely be worth seeing again. Here are my two more concert highlights for you.

From Elektro-Funk up to fresh German Pop

It is a real pity that this year’s Eurovision Song Contest did not take place. We would have already gotten the full dose of musical madness from Daði Freyr. Now only a small circle could enjoy this. The Icelander convinced me from the first beat to the last note. The interaction with his guitarist and the drummer, as well as with the audience was a real joy. The only thing that was difficult was to sit in the Mojo Club, but Daði Freyr made it a little easier for us with funny moderations. A show between comedy, concert and festival, and we’ll be back soon.

We are used to get a lot of surprise from BLOND. Accordingly, the expectations for the performance at the Reeperbahn Festival were high. We were not disappointed. We started with the “stage entrance” as a polonaise, the three costume changes (without leaving the stage) and the agile dancing. uh no pantomie artists, let us more than enjoy the show. How the trio forced us to move despite the ban on dancing, made us roar along and finally released my favourite Spinaci from an all around happy show, you can still experience at the Reeperbahn Festival Videothek.

Networking on the Reeperbahn

Personally, I am also grateful that this festival has taken place. Unfortunately, this year the online programme and thus the conference was not enough. I finally met and exchanged ideas with friends next to the stages again. People you have only heard or read about via Messenger or telephone in the past six months. Especially great was the spontaneous meeting with the Messed!Up magazine and Rene’s Redekiste. We should make the direct exchange with other magazines more regular. It was also great to finally have a chat with Lina from MonaLina Promotions about female HipHop. There is a lot going on here right now. If you still haven’t taken a look at her project 365 female MCs, you should do so now. With this recommendation I leave the Spielbudenplatz and the Reeperbahn Festival for this year. Hopefully we will see each other again next year.
