With Nomadic Hobo, Marla Moya is releasing the first single from her upcoming album. The track is folk, country and a small portion of pop. It tells of change and invites you to dream.
This first song by Marla Moya sounds familiar. Nomadic Hobo has the longing that 90s pop with country elements already brought. It tells of the time when the musician fulfilled her dream of living carefree and freely in Paris. She gave up her flat in Berlin and lived with friends and acquaintances. ‘I’m a true nomad right now – and I wouldn’t change a thing,’ says the musician. This lightness, but also the arrival in a place and the traces of this time are carried by the piece.
We were able to hear the track live a few weeks ago before its release. The music label Backseat had invited us to the inauguration of their new offices and of course there was live music from their own ranks. Alongside the wonderful Betti Kruse, Marla Moya also gave us a first glimpse of her upcoming album Sanguine Soul. We were able to experience a musician who filled a room purely with her voice and a guitar in her arms.
For me, this evening revealed a self-determined nomad who is also a wonderful storyteller. Light, relaxed, if a little nervous, she talked about her life and the creation of new music. Together with a band consisting of such outstanding musicians as Joachim Cooder (Buena Vista Social Club) and Doug Pettibone (Tracy Chapman, Keith Richards), she recorded the pieces in the studio of producer Robert Francis in Los Angeles.
So here was a talented young woman who has decided to pursue a career in the music business. At a time characterised by uncertainty and in an industry that only measures success in clicks and likes. I think that’s brave and I’m glad that these people still exist. Working with musicians who already have years of experience and great success shows confidence in this talent. We should have that too.
So listen in and let yourself be carried away by the first bars full of lightness. Let yourself be seduced by music reminiscent of greats like Melissa Etheridge, Katie Melua and, of course, Tracy Chapman. Flinta artists who have paved the way for today’s generation of musicians, making it easier for Marla Moya to fulfil her dream.
A video has been released with the single, which picks up on the relaxed collaboration in LA once again and perhaps increases the anticipation of everything that is to come. The first concert dates have already been announced for the coming weeks.
